It can also be attached to a window or the main entrance of a building. In the case of a house, it’s attached to the main door. It can also be placed on the wall to cover a sidewalk.
Awnings are usually made up of canvas and metal as it was used before by ancient Egyptian and Syrian civilizations as shade for market stalls. They called them before as “woven mats.”
Today awnings are usually made from synthetic fabrics like acrylic and polyvinyl. Such fabrics are waterproof and do not discolor, thereby maintaining the splendor of the overhangs even when there’s rain or snow.
But today awnings can also be pulled back and kept when they’re not really needed; these very special and practical extenders are called retractable awnings. Before, awnings had fixed frames where the canvas was attached to metal on each side and these metals were hinged to the walls. Previously the awnings could not be retracted.
But now there are awnings that can be pulled back, both manually and automatically. These types of awnings are convenient especially for storeowners with outdoor stalls. When they keep their things at the end of the day, or when there’s very fine weather, they can easily pull back the awnings.
Manually, these extenders are pulled back using rope and pulley arrangements. On the other hand, there is also a home operation system that can pull back and deploy awnings automatically.
Retractable awnings have many useful functions. Its main function is for shade. Restaurants which provide outside dining for customers who enjoy eating in breezy areas, use awnings to provide them shade. They use awnings instead of having a roof or a permanent canopy constructed and assembled, which cost more. Retractable awnings actually reduce the temperature by around 20 degrees. So people under it feel cooler and are better protected from the sun or the rain if ever. These overhangs also gives the restaurant added beauty and attitude.
For homes, awnings are not only used to give shade to wall side plants, windows, or sliding glass doors, but also to add additional living space. Awnings make a simple garden area look like an exquisite patio or gazebo.
Scorching rays from the sun make you sweat and don’t really make outdoors a good place for relaxation even when there’s fresh air. With well chosen awnings, you could create an outdoor oasis for your home. The awnings can also be used for your RV. You have ready portable shade for when you go out and have a picnic. You just deploy the overhang when you’re eating, and pull it back when you go home.
